Ah the Robertson Brothers. I’ve probably heard them sing hundreds of times and never thought to look them up before. For the uninitiated, here are the lyrics of their most famous work:

Donald “Flathead” Fisher

As he entered the classroom, Don was fond of saying “alright, settle down” in a weary and worn out manner. “Flathead” was the school principal and one of the original characters in the programme.

 

He ruled the school in firm but fair style. In the early days he had many run-ins with a young tearaway called Bobby. She had great academic potential but was too much of a rebel to be confined by his rules. Needless to say the two of them were surprised when it turned out that he was her father. What made it even more interesting was the fact that Bobby had dated Alan, Don’s son, before he died of a brain haemorrhage on the beach. The incestuous ramifications of it were never really talked about and swept, conveniently, under the carpet.

 

Marilyn was one of Don’s many female fancies. They formed a very unlikely couple but had a child called Byron. Unfortunately, Byron died, and the marriage didn’t last much longer. Poor old Don.

 

Don had many lost and newfound relatives turn up on his doorstep over the years. One of them was his daughter Rebecca, who turned up twice played by two different actresses.

 

In recent years Don met up with the light fingered June, who would nick anything not tied down. Don found her kleptomania irresistible and took her off to the Whitsundays to enjoy their retirement and to play games like “what’s she stolen today?” Don’s grandson was packed off to live with them after his tragic accident, which left him crippled.

kissThey’ve gone very forthright in Summer Bay of late. Tony actually said the S-word and no-one batted an eyelid.  
What ever happened to “taking it to the next level” or being “really into” someone? Between Martha and her one-night conquest, and Matilda with her eyeliner and lust, it’s all go! I suppose it has been a while since the last teenage pregnancy..

Home and Away Plot Template #1

1.  Kid arrives in Summer Bay

2.  Kid has no relatives who seem to give a damn
3.  Kid is in H&A for roughly one episode before s/he is taken under Irene/Sally's wing
4.  A dark secret from Kid's past is revealed
5.  Secret is revealed, drama ensues, Kid is integrated into Summer Bay society despite his/her past
 
By the way, if the Kid in question is a "crook kid" (see Stewart, Duncan), s/he will spend a few episodes being surly before the magical sea air turns him or her into an entirely pleasant young adult.

Kirsty and Jade, the Sutherland “twins”

Kirsty and Jade were so close that they were psychic. They had that bond that twins sometimes have on tv. Only they weren’t. Twins. It turns out that Kirsty was adopted and had an identical twin sister called Laura. Laura was the same actress with hair extensions. This doesn’t explain how she had the psychic twin bond with Jade but the writers conveniently forgot about that one.

Jade and Kirsty hung around the bay for years, exchanging boyfriends Seb and Nick. But then Kane showed up. He raped Danii, Kirsty’s sister, which seemed to make him irrisistable to Kirsty. They started dating on the sly but Kirsty fell pregnant and it all went off. Rhys Sutherland routinely blew his top over nothing so went mental when presented with this, something actually worth getting angry over. Kirsty had her baby but herself and Kane legged it for a life on the run as he was due to end up in jail.

Jade organised a sit in protest in her school which resulted in her getting expelled and failing her HSE. Nice one. She then fell under the influence of Duncan and poor old Seb ended up paralysed as a result. Read more in the Duncan Stewart post. Jade left the bay in shame to go and live with Kit Hunter in the city. Hasn’t been heard from since.

Dodge

Occasionally Home and Away has a really evil character and Dodge was one of those.  He pretended to be best mates with Steven while failing to mention that he had burned down the building where Steven's uncle had been staying and killed him.  
 

When Stevo found out he was rightly pissed off. He wanted to use his Karate skills on Dodge but Tom persuaded him not to and Dodge was sent to jail. 
 

Years later when Dodge got out, he tracked Stevo down.  It was now time for them to get the scrap in that Tom had foiled all those years ago. Dodge said "Hello Stevo" and punched him.  Little did Steven know that Dodge had been putting his time inside to good use. "I've been working out". He too was now a master of the martial arts and gave poor Stevo a right stuffing.  He tried to kidnap Steven's girlfriend at the time Kelly but he was again brought to justice and never seen again. Surprising really, given how easily people break out of that jail.
